Grab your finger food- literally- Santa Clarita Diet is back for season 3 and it’s bloodier than ever before. And this time everyone is going zombie. Drew Barrymore, Timothy Olyphant and the entire cast is back for this comedic horror that dropped on Netflix on March 29th, 2019 with ten episodes as the previous seasons. We find the Hammond’s still dealing with the problems season 2 left them with. Anne thinks Sheila is sent from God to do his work and rid evil people, Joel is on the hunt to find out about the Knights of Serbia, and Abby and Eric deal with consequences from blowing up the fracking site. This season featured multiple story lines and was laugh-out-loud funny.
Sheila and Joel make a perfect team that also creates a heart to the show. This season seemed to have more going on than the other two. Whenever they solved a problem five more would pop up. The main focus in this season is the Knights of Serbia are after the undead while Sheila also finds herself having to care for multiple new undead people. Even though it’s a dark comedy, the show is vibrant and light compared to a gloomy vibe. There’s a welcoming ambiance in the show that also features action, suspense, comedy, and a lot of blood. The most editing was done when it came to the zombie shots; most of them sped up, to show an exaggeration of speed by them. For example when Sheila has one of her human meals it was a jarred fast edited shot. But maybe the standout character in the show is the CGI Mr. Ball Legs, the organ Sheila vomited in season one, that she now keeps as her pet that looks like a spider. And this little guy is a key player that sets us up for the next season.
There are quite a few new characters this season that add on to the broadening story lines. We really see the Hammonds dealing with Sheila’s secret not being so secretive anymore. There is so much that happens in every episode and an abundance of information that most of the episodes almost blur together into one for me. I would’ve liked to see more standout episodes but the jokes were probably the best part of this season.
The last episode left us with quite a few questions, like what did we just watch? And where is everyone going to go from there? With an unexpected twist, it also serves to be the best episode in the season and possibly even the funniest. Sheila snacking on body parts and Joel eating crunchy celery to match the sounds while We Belong by Pat Benatar plays in the background was the best opening to an episode. The show will most likely get a season 4 as it is an easily binge worthy and who doesn’t love to watch Drew and Timothy on the screen. I know I’m eager to see what chaos the Hammonds and the undead will bring for another season.
Why Does it Matter?
We all need at least one show we can escape from reality and watch other people’s problems for once. There is a sweet family dynamic in the show that makes up for all the darkness and I highly suggest Santa Clarita Diet for a good laugh and also if you have a love for Drew Barrymore.
I give it 8/10 stars.
